Starboy Terri: Is Wizkid’s Starboy Records The Worst Label In Nigeria?

Starboy Terri: Is Wizkid's Starboy Records The Worst Label In Nigeria?

Remember Terri? The talented new-faced artist who wowed us with the sweetest (majority opinionated it the best) verse on Wizkid’s 2018 hit record “Soco”?

The young man, we eventually found out, was the new signee of Wizkid’s Starboy Records, who went by the stage name “Terri.” He quickly started gaining attention to his craft after that one rememberable verse.

A comparison to Wizkid–because people thought they sounded too alike–propelled Terri to the top among his then contemporaries (up-and-coming artists), even though he hadn’t a debut single as of then. We could say of his future in three words: He was promising.

What Then Happened to Terri’s Career?

Terri’s first single under Starboy was “Bia,” a club banger that might’ve done better, gone bigger, if pushed promotionally.

Now, think of Terri as a Mavin artist: After “Bia,” a debut EP or album would launch right off to keep his sound next to the ears of people, already overwhelmed with artists.

Rema debuted 2019, the year after Terri’s debut, with a banging single–“Dumebi”–and a self-titled EP at once. This Mavin strategy, which other record labels quickly adopted, got him a lot of fans and registered his sound with the audience.

Starboy Records, on the other hand, slowed down the push of Terri soon as the music video for “Bia” dropped. The label withdrew the little attention from Terri to the established and internationally recognized Wizkid. Poor boy!

Or, to put it right, Wizkid withdrew the little attention he gave to Terri for himself, who was already being looked after by RCA. Good boss!

It was also after Terri’s Omah Lay’s debut. The same method that brought Rema into fame brought Omah Lay too. Rema won the 2019 award for Headies’ Next Rated and Omah Lay won the 2020 award. Both walked into the industry after Terri.

All Is Not Well!

Last week Saturday, Terri , who maintains a low public profile, posted on his X page a bunch of messages about his unknown health complications and his career.

About his career–Terri’s posts agreed that he is unhappy with how present things are. “See Terri for Terri,” he cried out in the post.

Does Wizkid Even Care at all?

Wizkid doesn’t seem to care. Terri recently released two songs, “Blessed” and “Show “You,” but Wizkid posted nothing about it. Instead, he gave a shout out to Ayra Starr on her new album release, via X.

A few months before, likewise, he ignored Terri, his own signee, in his list of favorite young artists in Nigeria.

Terri deserves a better treatment, however you look at this. Starboy Records needs to sit up!
